London-based sales and distribution banner Carnaby International has locked down a series of acquisitions for its post-cold war Middle East-set spy thriller, Damascus Cover. Among the pickups for the Jonathan Rhys Meyers and John Hurt-starring title, currently in post-production, were HGC in China, India’s Empire Networks and South African distributor Crystal Brook.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors, Mission: Impossible III) is set to take the lead in spy thriller Damascus Cover, producers said Monday.
Rhys Meyers was announced alongside fellow cast members Olivia Thirlby (Juno, No Strings Attached), John Hurt (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,Alien), Igal Naor (Green Zone, Munich) and Navid Negahban (Homeland). The film is being produced by U.K.-based Big Book Media, while Carnaby International will launch global sales in Berlin.
Directed by Daniel Berk, whose previous outing as director was 1998’s undead horror sequel Sometimes They Come Back… for More, and produced by Hannah Leader (Lucky Number Slevin, Gosford Park), Damascus Cover is based on a 1977 novel by Howard Kaplan
“I’m enormously excited about this role. This was a hugely significant time in the conflict in the Middle East, post-Cold War and with the collapse of the Berlin Wall, when an amount of spies were redeployed to the Middle East, where the theater of covert operations would now take precedence,” said Rhys Meyers, who is also starring in Roland Emmerich’s fellow European Film Market title Stonewall.
Damascus Cover will get its world premiere in Berlin.

Well guys, the viewer ratings are in and guess which show debuted at #1 with a staggering 5.3 million (and rising) viewers?! What makes it even better is the fact that Jonathan was also a producer on the episode! Well done to everyone involved and here’s to more ratings like that over the coming weeks!
NBC unveiled its new Friday block last night with the return of Grimm and the launch of Dracula at 10 p.m. Fast National returns give the freshman series a 1.8 rating with adults 18-49 and 5.3 million viewers. The network’s first scripted push into the hour in some time, it won the hour in the demo and held 100 percent of its lead-in – Source; THR
